Are Your Bad Habits Halting Your Business Growth?

Put the phone down and work!

You've probably either heard someone tell you this, or have had to tell some of your employees this exact phrase numerous times. More often than not the person being accused of always being on their phone can simply make the argument that they use it for work, or they're checking something out. I have no doubt that you and I both have been guilty of pretending to use our handy dandy mobile distraction device for work. Now while in the loosest sense, we could probably find some form of justification for this to actually be the case. I think we can all agree that about 90% of the time, we're really just scrolling through social media, looking at interesting YouTube videos or window shopping for more things that we don't need, when in fact, we should be working towards our purpose.

Forming bad habits is such a mindlessly effortless thing to accomplish. More often than not, we don't even realize that we're forming bad habits until the consequences of not checking them in the beginning come back around to bite us. Much like unintentionally packing on more weight than we really want for ourselves, forming bad habits are often coupled with dopamine hits or other forms of instant gratification that all seem small and insignificant at first. So how could these minuscule and otherwise negligible little indulgences possibly harm us in the long run? Well that's actually pretty easy to answer.

Progress is an uphill battle and continuous forward momentum no matter how small takes time and dedication to build up if you want to be successful. There is an endless number or metaphors or examples that I can throw at you to really drive this home. But the fact of the matter is that if you want to succeed in life, business, or as a small business owner, then you need to eliminate the bad habits that interrupt the forward momentum you're trying to build towards your goals. Each and every time that you find yourself playing a couple minutes of a puzzle game on your phone or watching a short entertaining video is much more than just a couple minutes of distraction. It's an interruption to you entering the "flow" of your work mindset. In the same way that a professional athlete needs to be in the zone during their training sessions or during the big game, when you're supposed to be diligently working towards your goal you need to almost entranced and focused on the task at hand.

Being able to laser focus in on the tasks that lay before you will ultimately be the deciding factor as to whether or not you're ready to go when it's crunch time. The most reliable way to fail when the time comes is to not have spent the time leading up to a big event, deadline, or even just a professional goal is to spent the time leading up to it in an inadequate fashion. When it comes to building a business, running it, and ensuring that it flourishes, this is even more definitive.
