So You Just Started Your Own Business...Now What?

New Business Onwer Blog Budd Consoidated

Well first off, congratulations on having the guts to pull the trigger and start your journey as an entrepreneur and small business owner! Having been a fresh business owner myself some odd years ago, I can completely recall exactly how I was simultaneously excited, nervous, and just utterly baffled by the endless stream of questions that constantly popped into my head about what to do next. I was very fortunate however, to have been blessed with a mentor/business partner in my early days. I can’t even begin to adequately express just how much help it was having a seasoned entrepreneur to bounce ideas off of or to have someone to offer me guidance as I continued to build out my new business. Unfortunately, most new entrepreneurs or new business owners aren’t so lucky as to have an individual who has walked the path that they’re starting to head down before.

In most cases, you’ll be entirely beside yourself in your decision making. Since only about 25% or less of our population actually own small businesses. The odds of you being amongst peers becomes pretty unlikely. So the first thing I would recommend is to find something or someone to help you better orient yourself or at least get a better grasp on developing your business-sense. Just as people find that a higher level of education must be achieved for a degree, you must now find ways to up your game in the business education department. Keep in mind that this is not simply limited to obtaining a degree for a specialization. Although that would certainly be beneficial, it does not give you the proper perspective that you’ll need to increase your chances of success. You’ll also need to find a way to get access to practical experience, education, or at the very least, some advice.

Learning to better yourself and learn from the mistakes or bad experiences of others will be instrumental to ensuring that you don’t repeat those same mistakes as you’re just beginning your newfound path as a small business owner. This is because in the early stages of your business development process, you have an extremely high degree of risk, most likely very limited capital to work with, a brand new reputation to maintain and build upon, and most importantly, a short amount of time to start building some positive momentum for your business. Each and every market in almost every industry will be chocked full of competitors both fresh and seasoned to which you will have to not only keep pace with, but at least in some sense or another, begin to outperform.

So where would someone go to meet with a professional or to begin to cultivate their business education? Obviously I’m biased, as it’s my business that I’m recommending. But booking yourself an initial consultation call with Budd Consolidated can help expedite your path to getting on the right track. With years of experience under my belt, specifically in developing new businesses and building out infrastructure, marketing, web development, and numerous other facets that go into building a successful business model, it would be a smart business decision to book a 1-on-1 session with me. To be fair though, if you’re strapped for cash or would like to just get a feel for how a business consultation/coaching session would go, then there are many other business coaches out there who offer free first sessions or a complimentary “discovery call”. I’m not knocking any of them for offering this option. In fact I believe that it’s a rather smart strategy in which they can familiarize themselves with you and your business prior to attempting to close the deal with you, so to speak.

There are two reasons why I don’t offer free consultations or complimentary “discovery” calls. The first being that I value my time and the time of each and every one of my clients or partners. So I prefer to keep my schedule reserved only for those who make a commitment to themselves, and to me by investing in a coaching/consultation session. You can check out the details on my 1-on-1 coaching/consultation page to learn a little more. The second reason is because I’ve also taken the time to make practical business development education affordable and accessible at your own pace.

If you’re not someone who thinks that you’d benefit from direct coaching, you’re still going to need to find a way to hone your business sense and get a grip on what it means to be a new business owner so you can find your path forward. For this reason, I’ve curated a growing collection of online business development courses to provide anyone and everyone who wants to strike it out on their own a fighting chance against these seemingly insurmountable odds.

Finally, if you find that you feel alone in this great undertaking. Then one of the first things you need to do is find a group of peers to develop with. People are social creatures, and there have been numerous studies indicating that being amongst a group with the same or similar goals and ambitions has an overall positive effect on long-term success. It is for this exact reason that I've implemented membership options on Budd Consolidated to allow for new business owners to work with other like-minded individuals and receive regular training on important business success topics.
