Strategy Vs. Plan: What's The Difference?

Building your business will take a considerable amount of time, energy, and resources. There's no getting around that simple fact of life. But how does someone map out their agenda in a way that makes building their business more of an achievable goal? If you ask some people they might say that they simply followed their plan, or another might say that they did it strategically step by step.

Frankly, if you're getting those types of answers, then the person really doesn't want to share their actual roadmap to success. It's almost like a secret treasure map that they're scared to give away for fear of losing their own success somehow. In truth, both answers would be half-truths. In all likelihood, any business that has found long-term success has done so by following their plan using some sort of strategic and repeatable process. So where do we draw the line between the two concepts of a plan or a strategy? So how can you move forward with finding your path to success in business? In short, you must learn how to formulate not just a plan or a strategy, but a combination of both.

Plans are more similar to dreams and goals than actually being actionable steps. A plan serves a person better when it gets treated as more of a direction to follow or a destination to arrive at. Now a strategy as a concept helps a person accomplish a goal or to meet and objective. You see this in games like chess. The plan is to beat your opponent, and you do so by out strategizing them at every turn. Finding your success in business isn't much different than this. You simply think of what you want or where you want to be at the end, and then you can begin to fit the pieces together. Most of the clients that I've come across have tried to find their way to success on their own several times before finally reaching out to schedule a call to build

I've come to find that a strategy without an overall plan will never award you any long-term measure of success if it isn't accompanied by an overarching plan. As a counterweight to this stance, a plan is going to be useless without one or more well thought out strategies to help guide your ambitions to light. To put it simply, a plan is an idea or the end point for a goal, and a strategy is what makes up the incremental steps towards this goal. You can see the full scope of these two concepts being woven together when creating a business plan.

A proper and strong business plan will outline the overall goals for you and your business. But more than that, is will also notate a collection of specific strategies within your overall business plan that have been meticulously crafted to meet the needs of your business. These strategies will address the different pieces of your overall plan by sorting them into different sections to be analyzed, evaluated, and create practical methodologies. These different sections tend to be things like market analysis, competitor analysis, and business model improvements. Each and every respective section of a business plan allows for the development of focused strategies to meet each individual need.
