To start your journey of becoming and entrepreneur is to begin your long and difficult road of fighting uphill battles. In most cases, a new business owner would be doing so blindly, as there is no real roadmap to success for a new small business owner. Everything will seem as though you're experiencing it for the first time with a new set of eyes providing a different perspective on life. If this happens to sound familiar to you, then you're probably one of us who for whatever reason, just couldn't sit still and live their life following the regular path of working a 9-5 job. Sometimes a person just has something gnawing at the back of their mind telling them that they're built for something different. This tends to be the case for those of us who have whatever it is inside of us that drives us to seek out new paths that we can walk. In a sense, we're still just explorers or adventurers at heart, and the idea of following the paved road for the rest of our lives just makes us feel as though we're trapped in some kind of box.
If you felt any kind of resonance from the intro to this article then you're most likely someone who might be able to take on the burden of starting and running your own business. This puts you in a group of less than 20% of the population in America. Meaning that you are by far a minority in this country, and as such there are less resources made readily available to you that you could use to better navigate this new landscape that you're choosing to walk. Although our country was founded on the idea of being able to pursue your own version of happiness, most people find comfort in consistency. As such, our country has become more and more inclined to provide education and opportunity for people to have a place to work. This workplace has rules, a schedule for their attendance, and security of livelihood for it's employees. For most people, simply knowing that they have security of their paycheck and can afford the roof over their heads or put food on the table for their families is more than enough for them to feel satisfied with their lives. I used to envy this. I always wondered how someone could just sit still, simply be happy, and continue on with their life. It certainly wasn't the case for me, and for a while I was convinced that it was just my lot in life to just go through the motions and follow suit. After all, since the vast majority of people are content to work their 9-5, the nature of our culture is one that provides the necessary tools and education to set them up for success in this. Schools teach you the basics of how to interact with each other, and higher education helps you to specialize in a particular skill-set. All of this is meant to help raise your chances of successfully obtaining and keeping a 9-5 job.
So why did I bother with the whole breakdown describing the nature and cultural of our existing educational system? It's pretty straightforward actually. Education and experience are vital to success. This is a major issue for new entrepreneurs and small business owners. The idea that pursuing your dream of becoming self employed or starting up a small business is a concept that a very small portion of people in our country actually try to tackle. Due to the extreme minority of this group, there is no standardized or systematic facility in place that can help nurture the potential of those who wish to enter into the world of entrepreneurship. Ironically, this is actually probably for the best in my opinion. Standardizing something that innately requires a type of person who at their core, rejects the idea of following a standardized system. So in light of this insight, we're stuck with another question. How exactly does someone get some form of guidance or practical business education? Surely there has to be a better way to achieve this without relying purely on trial and error, which would inevitably become costly. Being the owner of a business means that each and every financial loss or mistake will hurt your wallet the most.
This is where working with a business coach can help you take greater and more efficient strides towards creating a successful business model.
Think of it as a school in which all parties involved are there entirely of their own volition. Taking the opportunity to work with a business coach is an unbelievably valuable investment of your time. However, this school isn’t meant to provide broad strokes of standardized education to the masses. It’s designed to offer you a different perspective and advice on how to move forward. This is something that can only come from experience. When working with a business coach or business consultant, you’re not just taking the opportunity to learn what they know, but you’re also working together to come up with a way for you to borrow the cumulative knowledge and experience that you currently, won’t have. Knowledge and experience take time to develop, and both are absolutely necessary to find success. Since you’re probably starting your own business in your late twenties, mid-thirties, or maybe even later on in life, you’re going to need every advantage that you can get your hands on.
When a worker at a more established business makes a mistake, there are already contingencies in place to serve as safety nets and damage control. In most cases these contingencies were created as a reaction to a problem. Taking proactive contingency planning is something that can be difficult to do without prior experience from someone who has actually had to deal with these issues first-hand before. Much of what drives the success of a new business is establishing an efficient business model that leaves as little room possible for mistakes to be repeated, or even worse, to go unnoticed. A big part of working with a business coach is getting help setting up these contingencies and essentially getting a heads up on things to look out for that can throw a wrench in your operations.
